Famished: Flash Horror Guy now making games in Unity


MISSING THE DAYS OF FLASH

Remember Flash games? I was one of those devs from way back then. I worked on quite a few games. Mostly horror point n clicks,   namely The Insanity series, and did the artwork for the game Rebuild 2, which was a bigger hit than any of mine. 

I've made about a dozen games. Check out the website if you're interested. 

When Flash died we all had to jump off the virtual Titanic, and I didn't even bother writing anymore  games until about four years back.  This is my first Windows title made in Unity with full 3d;, one of many to come hopefully. 

"Famished" is a game about based in Kansas about a slow dipshit called  ‘Oatmeal’ who's destined for nothingness and his friends and family let him know that every chance they can. His mundane existence takes a turn when he suddenly realizes he's got an unnatural urge to eat that he can't switch off.  What starts off as a mere healthy appetite evolves into something far more sinister, something..not of this world. 

If that sounds a bit like an episode of CreepShow, that's exactly what was being aimed at. Famished won't make you jump out of your seat like some of my other horror games, it's light horror but it has a revenge story that a lot of people can hitch their pole too. 976-Evil...Fright Night. Those types of 80's horror vibes. 

Something that feels a bit like an episode of CreepShow, if you've ever seen that. 

So go ahead and grab the demo, it's only 150mb and you get a lot in there.  I'm currently working on the final scenes. 

DEVELOPMENT

I've been working on the game for about a year and a half now. Too long, but that's how it goes!  

Blender was used for the modelling, texturing, though I  fast-tracked many of the characters using free software such as MakeHuman for the base characters before they were refined. I shall at some point be making most of the models in the game available for public download. Sharing is caring after all, and I'm actually a teacher in my day job here in Japan.

TOOLS

C#, Meshy, Gimp. Unity IDE+loads of excellent packages from the Assets Store. Audacity, Github repo. I've used both the excellent ElevenLabs for VO but a couple of the voices are actual actors.

COLLABS

I did have a couple of partners early on in the project, but as you'll find out one day if you're a game dev - if you can't pay them they do bounce eventually. To his credit one of the guys, Ravenshore, did stick around for a good six months and helped a fair bit with some of the later scenes such as the Slots and Windy Alley.  But from here on in I'm running the show alone. TBH the project is too big for a single guy and that's been absolutely wrecking me but I'm one of those busy idiots that just have to finish what they start.
